What does the word tattoo mean? Where did it originate from? When did it all began? Well let me tell you a little
The words tattoo has two major derivations.
Tattooing began over 5000 years ago. During the bronze age tattoos were thought to have healing and therapeutic properties (gathered from the discovery of Otzi the ice man). Tattoos are and have been very global for centuries. Each continent and country’s tattoo history has their own beliefs about the significances and properties of tattoos. Ranging from all over Asia, Russia, Africa and the Pacific Islands. The Pacific Islands has had a very major part in tattooing and it has a major significance in their culture.
Names for tattoo in Pacific Islands:
Samoa: “Tautau”
Hawaii: “Kaukau”
Maori: “Moko”
So there you are, where the word tattoo comes from, when it began and some of the origins. A little bit more on Pacific Island Art and some example of modern and traditional designs :
Polynesian is considered the most intricate and skilful tattooing of the ancient world. They believe that tattoo’s displayed their Mana (Spiritual power). The tattoos are often added to throughout a person’s life until the body is covered.
Samoan tradition is applying the tattoo by hand and by people of a rank such as chief, and their assistants of notable families. Tattooing ceremonies are usually elaborate and done onset of puberty, especially for young chiefs as it is an ascendance into leadership. The tattoo shows your endurance and dedication to their culture, belief and tradition.
In Hawaii traditional tattoos are not just to show individuality and to display, but to protect and guard there health and spiritual well-being. Men’s tattoos are usually along the arms, torso, legs and face. Women’s are usually on the hands, fingers, wrists and sometimes tongue. But western missionaries forced this tradition to decline because it was forbidden by the Christian church.
Maori tattoos “Moko” are one of the most impressive. Their tattoos are a mark of distinction(especially full face ones). They tell the story of a person’s life, ancestry, status, tribal affiliations and great events in their life.

Another ancient form of body modification that is still going strong: Scarification! Used for many reasons in ancient times, such as defining what tribe you belong to, rites of passage or through tradition, this form of body modification has carried on into modern times. Like tattoos and piercings, scarification is a way to express ones individuality in a very creative and unique way. Some examples of Modern Scarification:

Ever heard the saying “Go big or Go home”? Very commonly heard in the tattoo world, and i dont think they come any bigger than a tattoo bodysuit! Covering entirely the body or with some parts left ink free such as hands, feet, face, sometimes a strip down the torso, the bodysuit tattoo is a show of true dedication.
In history people would get this type of tattoo for many reasons. For instance in the pacific island tattoos were the story of you life, heritage and family. As events happened you got symbolic marks tattooed and eventually you would be left with a full and very meaningful tattoo bodysuit. In Japanese culture, though for a large amount of time tattooing was outlaw and used as a way to mark criminal, tattooing still carried on. Gangs such as the yakuza would have full bodysuit as a sign of they’re affiliation.
In modern times people are still getting full bodysuits, whether based on traditional designs:

inEar piercings is one of the oldest and most universal type of piercing. From tribal traditions, as a form of status, a way of rebellion, there are hundreds of reason for people to get ear piercing. I’ll go into depth in another post about the history of but for now, lets look at the types of ear piercing!
Now you may be thinking ” hey! that’s not called that, thats a scaffold!” Correct and industrial can also be know as a scaffold, just like a snug can be called an anti helix. This is just an idea of all the different ear piercings and some do have alternate names and this isn’t all! Let us not leave out “Stretched ears”:
From stretched ears you can go into dermal punches:This tool is used to basically cut a certain size hole into the ear (mostly used around the top of the ear and conch area)
With many more types and creative ways to pierce the ear you can see why thousands of years later we still love it!

As I have mentioned before I play a lot of video games, and I was recently playing Silent Hill Downpour where I noticed that some of the enemies had tattoos. This lead me to the wonderful idea of a post all about game characters with tattoos! So I went through a bunch of games and noticed that most of the tattoos you see on the characters are tribal, have a looky for yourself :
No of course this isn’t always the case that it’s tribal, but it does seem to be quite a common style for game characters. Going back to Silent Hill, I liked that they used traditional Prison tattoos for the prisoner enemies, here in the concept art they are very clear and done extremely well:
